    Hazardous waste collection events scheduled for Jefferson County

    JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Jefferson County Solid Waste Authority has announced that they’ll be hosting two events for residents to get rid of any hazardous waste.

    The electronic, televisions & household hazardous waste collection events will take place on Saturday, May 4 and Saturday, August 24 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. The collections will take place at the Goodwill located at 101 Preston Way in Falls Creek.

    The event is open to Jefferson County residents only and registration is required. You can sign up online here or by calling 412 – 567 – 6566 to schedule an appointment time.

    Altoona to host clean up days throughout May

    Here are the electronics that can be recycled at the event:

    • Audio, Stereo and video equipment
    • Cell phones
    • Computers and laptops
    • Computer wires
    • DVD/VCR/CD players
    • Fax machines
    • Keyboards, mice, speakers
    • Microwaves
    • Monitors
    • Printers, copiers & scanners
    • Telephones & answering machines
    • Televisions

    Household and hazardous waster that can be recycled at this event:

    • Antifreeze & motor oils
    • Areosols
    • Car & Household Batteries
    • E-bike batteries
    • Bug sprays & flea repellants
    • Hand sanitizers
    • Automotive products
    • Degreasers
    • Fluorescent and LED lights
    • Fuel additives
    • Gasoline, kerosene, diesel
    • Cleaning products, bleach
    • Paints and stains
    • Driveway sealers
    • Paint strippers and thinners
    • Pesticides
    • Pool chemicals
    • Propane gas grill tanks (15 – 20 lb. size only)
    • Window air conditioners
    • Dehumidifiers
    • Mini refrigerators

    There are varying costs for recycling items at the event and the only type of payment that will be accepted is by credit card.

    Here’s what it costs:

    • Televisions and monitors: $0.65 per pound
    • Non-video display electronics: $0.45 per pound
    • Paint: $0.75 per pound
    • Household hazardous waste: $1.10 per pound
    • Bulbs and batteries: $0.85 per pound
    • Propane gas/grill tanks: $7.50 each
    • Small freon containing devices: $0,.28 per pound.

    Items that are PROHIBITED from being recycled at this event include explosives, ammunition, radioactive materials, pharmaceuticals, syringes, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, mercury and tires.
