OHIO VALLEY (WTRF) — On the first Thursday of May, people all across the country will participate in the National Day of Prayer.

The National Day of Prayer was signed into law in 1952 by President Harry S. Truman but has been in practice since 1775 when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation .

According to NationalDayofPrayer.org, the law was amended by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of May and each year, the president signs a proclamation encouraging all Americans to pray.
