Wilkes County Commissioner Stoney Scott Greene turned himself in Monday at the Wilkes County Magistrates office where he was served with two private party warrants. Greene was charged with one count of Assault on a Female and one count of Domestic Criminal Trespass. He was released on a $1500 unsecure bond, according to the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office.

Greene has made headlines in recent months after he was outed by an animal rights group for his involvement in dogfighting some years ago in another state. At the March meeting of the Wilkes Board of Commissioners, Greene resigned from his position as chairman. At last month’s meeting Greene’s fellow board members all called for his resignation from the board, but Greene did not comply with that motion.

Animal Wellness Action President Wayne Pacelle addressed the Wilkes County Board during public comments in March, calling for Greene’s resignation and encouraging the board to support legislation aimed at curbing animal fighting.

The Animal Wellness Action group spoke out in opposition to an election campaign by Stoney Greene for North Carolina House District 94. Greene did not win in the Republican primary for District 94.

Greene told The Tribune in March that he resigned as chairman because he didn’t “want to distract from the good things going on in the county.”

“It had nothing to do with any kind of guilt or anything like that,” he said. “The people that have come after me are the same ones that think abortion is okay and don’t believe in God.”

“They’ve been after me ever since we passed the Christian proclamation,” added Greene, referring to a proclamation approved by the board in December of 2023 that states, in part, “The Wilkes County Board of Commissioners proclaim and recognize our Christian Heritage and urge all citizens to proclaim Christianity’s important influence in the foundation and life in our county, state and nation.”

The Animal Wellness Action group alleges that Greene was involved in dogfighting and say he was arrested on related charges in New Jersey in 2002.

“I don’t have any charges for anything like that,” Greene said. “I don’t have anything on my record in New Jersey so I’m not really sure what they’re referring to.”

Though Greene told The Tribune he did not know “what they’re referring to” in regard to the New Jersey charges, he has reportedly told other local news organizations he is aware of the charges and had worked to have them expunged.
