WINNIPEG, Manitoba — The Avalanche defeated the Jets, 6-3, Tuesday night in Game 5 of their first-round playoff matchup.

Here are three takeaways from Canada Life Centre with Colorado winning the series in five games (4-1).

    Second-round bound

The Avalanche took care of business, defeating Winnipeg in five games, to advance into round two of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Up next is a date with either the Dallas Stars or Vegas Golden Knights. Their first-round series is knotted up, 2-2, with Game 5 set for Wednesday night in Dallas. The Avs will enjoy a short break in between games to rest up for the next round.

    Comeback kings

The Avalanche trailed 1-0 less than two minutes into regulation when Josh Manson’s attempt to clear the puck bounced off Artturi Lehkonen and into their own net. No matter. Colorado rallied — three different times — to regain the lead. Three of Colorado’s four wins in this series were come-from-behind efforts. The Avs logged 26 comeback wins during the regular season to set a franchise record.

    Bednar’s legacy

Avalanche coach Jared Bednar is among the most successful postseason coaches in NHL history. He’s now 47-27-1 over 75 career playoff games coached. His .626 postseason winning percentage is fourth all-time (minimum 50 games coached) behind only Glen Sather (.706), Toe Blake (.689) and Scotty Bowman (.632). Bednar is nearing the franchise record for career playoff wins; Bob Hartley (49).

    Avalanche 6, Jets 3

What happened: Colorado advanced to the second round with another resilient comeback victory in Winnipeg.

What went right: The Avalanche tied the game, 1-1, when a Valeri Nichushkin one-timer on the feed from Devon Toews beat Connor Hellebuyck in transition. Colorado led in the second period when Yakov Trenin scored, and then jumped into the glass in celebration. The Avs went up again, 3-2, when Neal Pionk scored an own goal at the crease (credited to Artturi Lehkonen). Colorado regained the advantage early in the third, 4-3, when Mikko Rantanen deflected a Devon Toews shot from the point. Rantanen added another goal on a feed from Nathan MacKinnon. Josh Manson closed the game with an empty netter.

What went wrong: Winnipeg led 1-0 early in the first period on a net-front scrum when Josh Manson’s clear attempt bounced off Artturi Lehkonen (credited to Kyle Connor). The Jets knotted it up, 2-2, with a Josh Morrissey power-play goal in the second. Winnipeg re-tied the game, 3-3, with a Tyler Toffoli goal early in the third.

Between the pipes: Alexandar Georgiev made 32-of-35 saves. Hellebuyck stopped 26 of Colorado’s 31 shots on goal.

Injury report: Zach Parise was briefly removed from play in the second period as part of the league's concussion protocol when his head collided with the hip of Jets defenseman Colin Miller. Parise came back and finished the game.

What’s next: The Avalanche now face the winner of the Stars-Golden Knights series, which is tied 2-2 after four games.
