Mother arrested, charged with infant abuse

A Lowndes County woman was arrested April 22 and charged with abuse of a three-month-old infant.

Investigators with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s office booked La’Deajah Jackson, 23, into the Lowndes County Jail after looking into reports of injuries the child received from what appears to be multiple counts of abuse. Jackson, the child’s mother, was taken into custody after medical tests and her interview with investigators yielded information indicating she was responsible for potentially life-threatening injuries the infant sustained over time.

Commander Tony Green said the arrest stemmed from events on April 20, when Jackson noticed stiffness and swelling in the infant’s arm and visited Jackson Hospital in Montgomery seeking treatment.

“According to the mother, they responded to Jackson Hospital because the baby had swelling and stiffness to the left arm,” Green said. “[Medical personnel] notified our unit because the baby not only had a fracture of the left arm, but healing injuries as well, which is an indication of child abuse.”

Green explained that multiple injuries, several fractures, were found during the child’s examination. The infant was transported to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, where doctors confirmed the baby suffered 13 fractures and at least one skull injury.

“The baby is in foster care,” Green said. “And, to our knowledge, seems to be doing well.”

Jackson is held in the Lowndes County Jail and charged with one count of aggravated assault. Green said he expects additional charges to develop as the investigation continues. He explained that the infant’s identity is being withheld due to the age of the victim.
