BENTON & FRANKLIN COUNTIES, Wash. – With high school graduation right around the corner the Tri-Cities Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has opened its first annual scholarship for Hispanic students looking to get a degree in business.
Apple Valley News Now spoke to the chamber about what they're hoping to accomplish with the awards.
According to the Tri-Cities Hispanic Chamber of Commerce assistant director, Raul Contreras, said this year they plan to give two scholarships. Each recipient will get a one-time $2,000 scholarship that rewards students majoring in the business field.
“Overall we're just gonna hopefully practice growth with higher-ed. Recipients, people who follow higher ed. We need to get our numbers of Hispanic students who pursue college, university, anything that it can be,” Contreras said, “We have over 250 members of local business owners. Not only small businesses, but we also have agencies, nonprofits and all of those. We want the Hispanic community to thrive in those areas. So that's why we chose business for the topic of the scholarship.”
It's more than just a scholarship though, it helps promote inclusivity Contreras said.
“I think us being involved in business is great. You know, when you're in school, sometimes all you see is textbooks. And then when you go out into the world and try to network, you might not see a lot of people that look like you,” Contreras said “Right now, I think this is something super inclusive to have this specifically for Hispanic kids going into business. It's letting them know that they belong here, and that we're here for them if they need any help.”
To qualify, the student has to be a senior graduating high school, excepted into a community college or university, live in Benton or Franklin counties and have a G.P.A. of 2.5 or higher.
The deadline to apply is May 17th at 5 p.m. and the winners of the scholarships will be announced in June
