ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. ( KLFY ) — Cleanup is able to finally get underway in St Landry Parish from the two tornadoes that touched down two weeks ago.

The parish government held off Monday cleaning up due to rainy weather, but on Tuesday the storm cleanup efforts got underway. Parish President Jessie Bellard explains storm debris is being picked up along the sides of the roads anywhere in St. Landry Parish.

“Smaller roads like Dry Bayou whenever one tree falls it blocks everything. So, they pick it up and push it aside until they go back and completely remove the debris. That’s what’s happening now,” Bellard explained.

To pay for the work, the parish government was able to secure funding from the governor’s office.

“Thank God he stepped and said look FEMA isn’t going to come in and help us so they are going to pay 75% of the funding and we pay 25%,” Bellard said.

As the cleanup takes place, traffic control is paramount. Parish Investigator Spencer Cornette urges drivers to keep an eye out for work crews.

“We have workers on each end of the road with stop signs and slow signs,” Cornette said.
