Amy Deer, a Garrard County resident, said she noticed a few weird things over the last couple of days.

“Yesterday morning, we saw our trash cans knocked over, but they weren’t just like knocked over right where they were at. They were kind of moved. And then there were a few trash bags out by the tree line. And so we thought, that’s kind of odd. And then last night, when probably around 10:00, we heard the trash cans kind of getting dragged across the gravel,” Deer said.

    But that wasn’t all.

“We lost one chicken the day before, so we’re kind of wondering if that might be what happened, and our neighbor lost some chickens—quite a few—just before that,” she said.

    And then she saw it.

“It was right by the back door, but by the time I got back with the phone and with a flashlight, it was already a little bit further out here and just going through our garbage that we had picked up the morning before,” Deer said.

“I have three little dogs. So, I mean, when we let them out, we stay right here with them and haven’t gone back down to the tree line. So I kind of want to know if he is still here. But after they saw him or after we saw him and he ran off to the woods, the sheriff’s office came out here and went along the back side of the property and they found it hunkered down in the woods on our property,” she said.

As FOX 56 previously reported , although black bear attacks are rare in Kentucky, with only one reported in the last 100 years, there are steps to take to limit interactions with bears:

    • Do not approach or feed the bears
    • Do not leave pet food outside
    • Secure all small pets
    • Secure trash cans and lock dumpsters
    • Keep doors and garage doors secure
