YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Over 200 people came out to Penguin City Brewing Sunday for music, food and activities all to support Dylan’s House.

Founder and director Amy Shope has a very personal connection to the nonprofit which helps young people with autism live on their own.

“We have a son who’s 23, Dylan, who moved out when he as 17. And he has done so amazing and it’s done so much for our family that we decided we wanted to give back and do the same thing for other families,” she said.

Shope said at the end of this year, Dylan’s House will own two properties that can house two to three individuals each.

It has also helped two families with house modifications and has gifted $6,000 in caregiver grants.

The organization has also helped Art Volpini’s son move out on his own.

“They have been mentors to us and really provided that inspiration. We probably didn’t think it was possible to do, but seeing someone else who has done it…that definitely put us on the track to ‘Hey, I think this could work for our son also,'” Volpini said.

Shope said they raised $125,000 from this event alone to support families like the Volpinis.

“I just think it’s unbelievable the way this valley has come together. The Mahoning County Commissioners showed up with a check for $20,000,” she said.

“The Valley has really showed up since the doors were open so we’re just…we’re blown away.”
