HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (WSPA) – The suspect in an officer-involved shooting that happened in early April has been charged in Haywood County.

We previously reported Haywood County deputies responded to a domestic call in the Bethel community on April 6.

The caller advised 911 communicators that the subject was there with a gun.

Upon arrival, deputies said they worked to de-escalate the situation but attempts were not successful, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.

The suspect, later identified as Steven Hawkins, 47 of Canton, was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office charged Hawkin with the following:

    • 3 counts of felony assault of law enforcement with a firearm
    • felony domestic violence protective order violation w/deadly weapon
    • felony purchase/possession of a firearm by a person subject to domestic violence order
    • misdemeanor domestic violence protective order violation
    • misdemeanor resisting public officer

He was also charged with two counts of misdemeanor domestic violence protective order from incidents that happened on April 19 and April 20.

He is currently being held in the Haywood County Detention Center on a $250,000 bond.
