Question 1:  Tell us a little bit about yourself and your experiences/accomplishments.

I am a retired teacher and administrator. I am a graduate of Baileysville High School and Marshall University. I also hold a Master’s Degree in Communication from West Virginia University and a Master’s Degree in Leadership Studies from Marshall University. I have additional graduate credit hours as well as hundreds of hours in professional development covering various school related topics.

I taught at the following schools:  Herndon High School (8 years), Mullens High School (5 years), Pineville High School (1 year), and Wyoming East High School (1 year). I was assistant principal at Baileysville High School for three years and at Westside High School for 11 years.

I was principal at Westside High School for two years before being appointed Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools in 2015. I served in that position for six years before retirement in 2021. I was also interim principal at Westside High during the 2021-2022 school term.

Question 2:  What made you run for the board of education?

I spent 38 years helping Wyoming County Schools help employees to help students in every way possible. I am proud of my years of service to the employees and students of Wyoming County Schools. I believe I have the skills and experience necessary to be beneficial to the school system, students, employees, and parents of Wyoming County Schools. I would be honored to have the opportunity to serve again, but this time, as a member of the Wyoming County Board of Education.

Question 3:  What are some issues facing Wyoming County Schools right now that you would like to see addressed and fixed?  How would you fix those issues?

Wyoming County Schools has 14 amazing schools filled with dedicated administrators, teachers, and support personnel who are working hard to help meet the educational, social, and emotional needs of students. As issues arise, they need to be examined and managed by a supportive, cohesive Board of Education as soon as possible.

Safety must be at the forefront of everything a school system does, both in policy and in practice. I was intricately involved in bringing Prevention Resource Officers to both high schools. There is more that can be done in this effort and with other safety initiatives. I believe I can be of assistance.

Attendance is an issue that faces every school and the system as a whole. There are proven methods that work to help students want to attend school and help families have the resources to send children to school.  This effort is one of the most important in any school system.

My experience in all aspects of education make me uniquely qualified to serve on the Board of Education. I will utilize my experiences to provide perspective, but also remain open-minded and flexible to new ideas and ways of serving the needs of children.

Question 4:  What makes you stand out from the rest of the candidates, what do you bring to the table that they don’t?

I have worked on four levels for Wyoming County Schools. I was a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and assistant superintendent. My experience is working in schools and for schools in the service of students, teachers, service personnel, and parents.

I believe in the Board of Education and the intent of community leadership.  My experience as an educator gives me a full range of perspective in that realm. Presently, as a retired person, I have the ability to step back and take a wider look with a very open mind. My bringing those perspectives together make me qualified to serve the children and citizens of Wyoming County on the Board of Education.

Question 5:  Is there anything else voters should know about you and your campaign?

The following quote from Mark Twain is among my favorites. “The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why.” I found out “my why” many years ago. Helping students as best I could was “my why”. With my proven level of dedication and work ethic, I think I can help make a difference.
