(FOX40.COM) — It is California Mosquito Awareness Week and the Placer Mosquito and Vector Control District held a drone demonstration on Friday to show the community how they tackle those pesky mosquitos.

The vector control district says that they are using this new technology often, sometimes up to four times a day, to help treat problem areas where there’s standing water.

They also use drones to detect mosquito breeding areas and to expedite spraying.

“Our job is to figure out when is it timely to go and control mosquitos or go and detect them – so our drones make that much easier than before,” Placer Mosquito and Vector Control District General Manager Joel Buettner told FOX40.com.

Right now the drones are focusing on mosquito spraying above agricultural areas, rural areas that have standing water and targeting specific breeds of mosquitos.

For those who don’t have personnel mosquito fighting drones here are some tips to keep in mind during mosquito season.

“Best thing, if you see mosquitos wear an EPA registered repellent or wear protective clothing…that gets harder as it gets warmer…definitely check your property for standing water right now, that’s the place where mosquitos can breed so dump and drain that water,” Buettner said.
