The True North solar project in Falls County, Texas crossed one of its last major hurdles to construction this week, as Avangrid, Inc. secured its final shipment of solar panels for the 238 MW site.

“We are thrilled to have reached another major construction milestone at True North, which is set to become Avangrid’s largest solar facility and our first in Texas,” Pedro Azagra, Avangrid CEO, said. “It’s no secret that the solar industry has dealt with challenges in securing solar panels to build these important renewable power facilities. With this final shipment of solar panels in hand, we are moving full speed ahead with construction and I look forward to seeing True North energized as we accelerate a clean energy transition.”

Under construction near Waco, Texas, the True North site will supply energy to Meta, formerly the Facebook company. In this way, it will back the company’s net zero commitment and support its second data center facility in Texas, which is currently under development as well. This 238 MWac (321 MWdc) solar farm is also expected to provide more than $40 million in property taxes over its lifespan.

While the project is a first of its kind for Avangrid in Texas, it’s not the company’s first foray into the region. It has successfully developed, built and operated wind energy facilities in Texas for more than 15 years, which now amount to more than 1,200 MW of capacity.

About half of the solar panels have been installed at True North to date, and Avangrid expects to finish construction later this year now that it has the rest of the panels in-hand.
