Construction workers hit, killed on I-83 in York County identified

YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM)– The construction workers who were hit and killed by a truck driver on I-83 in York County Wednesday morning have been identified by the coroner’s office.

The workers were identified by the York County Coroner’s Office to be Jesse McKenzie, 24, of Somerset, Robert Hampe, 42, of Meyersdale and Philson Hinebaugh III, 24, of Johnstown, according to a news release.

The cause of death for McKenzie and Hampe was from multiple blunt force trauma while Hinebaugh’s is from blunt force injuries, the coroner’s report states. Each of their deaths has been ruled accidental.

The workers, employed by CriLon Corp. of Somerset, were working on a crack sealing project on I-83 near MM 35.5 in Fairview Township when a box truck, operated by a 24-year-old driver, collided with a construction truck directing traffic with flashing arrows in the active work zone, according to Pennsylvania State Police, who are investigating.

The collision caused the box truck to continue onto the shoulder of the road where it hit the three construction workers, Troopers say. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

I-83 South was closed for hours on Wednesday morning between Exit 36, Fishing Creek. and Exit 35, PA 177 Lewisberry, while crews responded to the scene.

This crash comes as officials are working to raise awareness for work zone safety across the state for National Work Zone Awareness Week .
