Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Following multiple fatal motorcycle crashes throughout the state, Virginia State Police is encouraging motorcyclists to take a free self-assessment and road safety course.

Police say warmer weather tends to lead to an increase of motorists of all kinds on the roads, especially motorcyclists. In a recent two-day time span, five people were killed in motorcycle crashes in Virginia.

VSP's “Ride 2 Save Lives” course gives riders an opportunity to learn how to handle hazards, special situations, interstates and highways, curve negotiation, and more.

The courses are led by Virginia State Police Motors Troopers and will be offered throughout several localities in central Virginia until October.

The next course being offered locally is on May 18 at the Steel Horse Harley Davidson in Chesterfield County.

To enroll, you must have a valid driver’s license with a Class M endorsement. You must also have appropriate riding gear, a U.S. Department of Transportation -approved helmet and eye protection, and motorcycles must be street legal.
