Hanover County, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - In a unanimous decision Tuesday night, the Hanover County School Board voted to keep the Bible on school library shelves in Hanover County.

Under the school district’s library materials policy, which was adopted in June of 2023, the school board has the final say in which books should and shouldn’t remain on shelves.

Members of the board may remove a certain book if it is deemed to have sexually explicit content or pervasive vulgarity.

In November of last year, more than 70 books were removed from school libraries in the county as they were deemed to have sexually explicit content.

The library materials committee recommended the Bible be kept, stating the book does not contain sexually explicit content as defined in the Code of Virginia .

“The topics are diverse, and the inspiration is likewise expansive for instance, history— the history of the Jewish nation and slavery,” said Charlie Waddell of Hanover County, “The birth of Christianity, ethics and social values make up many of the books of the Bible.”
