KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — For the first time ever, the Knox County Criminal Court Clerk’s Office is cutting the prices on some older outstanding court fines. Some fines will be slashed by as much as 50 percent.

The eligible fines are tied to General Sessions Criminal Division cases from 2013 to 2017. The clerk’s office has partnered with a law firm to expand the program to as many people as possible.

Contact the law firm of Perdue Brandon Fielder Collins & Mott at 888-703-5315 or visit www.pbfem.com to find out if a case qualifies. The deadline to apply is July 1, 2024.

Knox County Criminal Court Clerk Mike Hammond said in a written release that it is not a coincidence that the discount comes as people receive their tax refunds.

“We hope people take advantage of this offer during tax season to settle their outstanding court financial obligations at a reduced cost,” Hammond said.

State law says criminal court clerks can accept “a lump-sum payment in full settlement” for fines that have been in default for at least five years.
