Driver cut off, beaten, carjacked on Long Island; 1 of 2 suspects arrested

NEW CASSEL, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- Police arrested one man and is searching for a second accused of cutting a driver off then beating him during an armed carjacking on Long Island over the weekend.

According to detectives, at 10:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, a 29-year-old man was cut off while driving his Hyundai four-door sedan at the intersection of Garland Lane and Maplewood Drive in New Cassel.

Two men then exited the red Mitsubishi SUV that cut the victim off. Luis Mario Matute, 20, and Carlos Matute, 42, approached the victim while Luis Mario Matute pointed a black handgun at the victim and demanded he exit his vehicle, officials said.

Once the victim complied, the men began striking and kicking him before fleeing the scene. The victim returned to his home where he called police.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Carlos was arrested a short time later while Luis Mario remains in the wind at this time.

Carlos Matute was charged with robbery, criminal possession of a weapon, grand larceny, menacing, and assault. He was arraigned on Sunday.

An investigation is ongoing.
