For the first time, former Vice President Mike Pence said publicly he will not endorse Donald Trump for president.

Pence appeared on Friday’s installment of The Story , where Martha MacCallum asked the former veep if he will vote for the man he served under for four years. Rather than decline to answer as he had done on numerous occasions, Pence, who challenged Trump for the nomination, offered a definitive response.

“We have not spoken since former President Trump sewed up the nomination, which he did earlier this week,” MacCallum said, referring to Tuesday’s primaries that gave Trump the necessary amount of delegates to clinch the GOP nomination. “And he has received endorsements from some of the people who were running against him. But we have not heard from you. Will you be endorsing your former president?”

    Pence responded:

Well, Martha, I appreciate the question. And it should come as no surprise that I will not be endorsing Donald Trump this year. Look, I’m incredibly proud of the record of our administration. It was a conservative record that made America more prosperous, more secure and saw conservatives appointed to our courts in a more peaceful world.

But that being said, during my presidential campaign, I made it clear there were profound differences between me and President Trump on a range of issues. And not just our difference on my constitutional duties that I exercised on January 6th.

I mean, as I have watched his candidacy unfold, I’ve seen him walking away from our commitment to confronting the national debt. I’ve seen him starting to shy away from a commitment to the sanctity of human life. And this last week his reversal on getting tough on China and supporting our administration’s effort to force a sale of ByteDance, TikTok–

MacCallum interrupted to ask Pence why he thinks Trump changed his mind on TikTok. This week the House approved legislation requiring a Chinese company to sell its stake in the platform. Trump opposes the measure.

Later in the interview, the MacCallum asked Pence if he will vote for President Joe Biden .

“I would never vote for Joe Biden,” Pence said, adding that he would not reveal his preferred candidate.

After Trump lost the 2020 election, the former president urged Pence – as the presiding officer over the election’s certification in Congress – to refuse to certify it. Lawyers for Trump claimed Pence could send the election to Republican legislatures in states that Trump lost and then the legislatures could vote to recognize slates of Trump electors as the valid slates.

Pence ignored Trump’s entreaties during certification on Jan. 6, 2021. This prompted a pro-Trump mob to storm the Capitol in an attempt to overturn the election. Some of the rioters chanted, “Hang Mike Pence!”
