Joe Biden undergoes mystery physical exam amid concerns over fitness for second term

By Chris Samuel & John O'sullivan,

President Joe Biden is set for a mystery 'unscheduled' health check-up as worries about his age increase. The 81-year-old President will have a long-awaited physical exam, with many questioning his health and ability to serve a second term.

The Biden administration has been asked repeatedly when the President would have his annual physical before the November election. Biden, who is the oldest Commander-in-Chief in US history, made the unexpected trip on Wednesday morning to be assessed ahead of a likely rematch with Republican rival Donald Trump , who some experts have also said is showing signs of cognitive decline , in the upcoming election.

"I'm going to Walter Reed to get my physical," Biden told reporters as he crossed the South Lawn to board Marine One. The results of the test will be released later on Wednesday.

Polls show that a majority of Americans think he is too old to run again for president and doesn't have the mental sharpness for a second term, which would end when he is 86 years old, reports The .

In his exam in February last year, White House physician Kevin O'Connor said the President's walk "remains stiff", but cleared him saying he was "healthy" and "vigorous." Biden does 45 minutes of balancing exercises with a physical therapist daily to address his walk.

Biden also had a detailed "neurologic exam" that found nothing "consistent with any cerebellar or central neurological disorder." "He did not demonstrate any motor weakness, but a subtle difference in heat/cold sensation could be elicited,' the 2023 physical report said."
