BEDFORD — Students at Rippowam Cisqua School on Thursday got to see what it's like to participate in athletics from the seat of a sports wheelchair.

Twelve wheelchairs were delivered to the school to be used by students who participate in Able Athletics. The Westchester-based nonprofit introduces multiple sports to children with various needs.

The wheelchairs, which were test-driven by students in grades 7 to 9, were purchased with part of a $30,000 grant provided by The Hartford for adaptive sports equipment.

Rippowam is one of several local schools to assist the Able Athletics program. The private school, which serves grades Pre-K to 9, has been providing free indoor playing space since the fall of 2022 and has hosted volleyball, lacrosse and wheelchair lacrosse.

More than 100 Able athletes have played at Rippowam.
