Video released by the Israeli military on Thursday shows piles of bodies of Hamas terrorists inside a narrow corridor — the apparent aftermath of an Israel Defense Forces attack raid in what they called a "significant" tunnel in a northern Gaza.

The footage was made public by the IDF and the Shin Bet, Israel's domestic security agency, which said the tunnel was discovered in recent days, the Times of Israel reported.

The passageway is part of the vast underground network dubbed the "Gaza Metro" that Hamas uses to shuttle weapons and operatives around the Gaza Strip.

According to the Times, officials said the Combat Engineering Corps' elite Yahalom unit used "diverse means" to identify and kill the Hamas operatives inside the tunnel.

The low-quality video, which does not inclde any audio, appears to show how a camera is lowered into the tunnel. One Hamas fighter takes the device in his hands before he is shot or hit by n explosive device, the Times reported.

The video then jumps to another recording, showing what appears to be the bodies of several Hamas terrorist on the floor of the tunnel.

The IDF did not indicate where exactly in northern Gaza the tunnel was discovered, but the Israeli army has been engaged in skirmishes with remaining Hamas fighters there, especially in the Gaza City neighborhood of Shejaiya, where nine soldiers were killed in an ambush earlier this week.

The underground tunnel system spans hundreds of miles and has been used since at least the 1980s, well before Hamas came to power.

The corridors were first intended for the smuggling of everything from weapons to black market goods and later expanded upon for military purposes as political rule of the Gaza Strip changed hands, according to experts.

Israel has maintained that the tunnels connect to civilian buildings and homes, including hospitals , in Gaza to help Hamas hide from airstrikes.
