(AUSTIN, Texas) Central Texas is being hit with a big storm, which could lead to severe flooding.

Flooding is consistently ranked as the second-deadliest weather occurrence, according to the National Weather Service.

Flooding water as shallow as 6 inches can stall or sweep away a car. One foot of water can sweep smaller cars away, and water up to 18 inches can sweep bigger cars off the road, according to KVUE.

People can check Drive-Texas.org before leaving the house, with an updated map of roads with hazards like flooding and debris.

Tips for driving during a rainstorm:

    • Turn around don't drown – don't drive on a road covered in water.
    • Don't use cruise control as you get less traction on slick roads.
    • Drive slowly to avoid hydroplaning.
    • If your car takes on water, leave the vehicle to get to safer ground.
    • Turn your headlights on.
    • Remain calm if your vehicle skids and avoid slamming on the breaks, instead steer in the direction your want your vehicle to go.
    • It is safer to be in a vehicle than outside, but seeking out shelter if possible is best.

Be sure to check your local radar for weather updates.
