They say that speed kills in just about every sport out there. You can’t coach speed — and when you’re faster than the opposition, there’s little answer to be provided without dramatically altering the style of play. And for the Miami Dolphins of 2021, that’s exactly what they’re hoping becomes their offensive identity and reality.

Because the Dolphins’ overhauled offensive cast offers no shortage of speed on the perimeter — which should then, in turn, create more room for everyone else to operate in the middle of the field. And one of the team’s biggest beneficiaries from such a plan becoming reality is running back Myles Gaskin. The Dolphins, who opted not to target a replacement for Gaskin this offseason, instead added a bunch of burners around him on offense — and throughout the course of OTAs and minicamp, Gaskin couldn’t help but notice the difference. He shared as much on a recent interview with Sports Radio 950 KJR in Seattle.

“Coming out of mini-camp, very pleased with how I did, how this team looks,” said Gaskin.

“A lot of speed on the outside. I think that’s the biggest takeaway that I had. We’ve got Jakeem (Grant), (Jaylen) Waddle, Will Fuller. We’ve got some fast dudes so I’m excited to see that.”

So are Dolphins fans everywhere. And so is Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Miami’s offensive attack consistently needed to string together 8+ plays in order to find the end zone on any given week. But the speed on the outside will hopefully prompt more explosive plays and, by extension, create more room for explosive plays in the middle of the field; too. This process is still very early on and Miami still has a full training camp to work through. But one thing we can be confident about, even now, is that this team is going to be a heck of a lot faster than the 2020 version on offense.
