(NORWALK, Conn.) The Norwalk Police Department announced on Monday that a man wanted in California for charges related to child copulation was arrested in Norwalk.

In a statement, police said that a Norwalk officer of the Special Services Division assigned to the U.S. Marshal Service Violent Fugitive Task Force, out of the Bridgeport office, was contacted by a Deputy U.S. Marshal on June 8 about a warrant out of Long Beach, California.

The Deputy Marshal was seeking assistance in apprehending 77-year-old Matthew Michael Gass for an extraditable warrant for sexual copulation of a child under 10 years of age and two counts of a lewd act upon a child under age 14.

On June 12, Norwalk police arrested Gass as he was sitting in the back of a vehicle on Fawn Ridge Road “without incident.”

Police said Gass was charged at the Norwalk Police headquarters building with a bond set at $2.35 million. Gass is scheduled to appear in court on June 22 at the Stamford Courthouse at 123 Hoyt St.
