Located in Lincoln Square, Japonessa Sushi Cocina has some of the best sushi I've had in Washington.

"We are a sushi cocina featuring a Japanese core concept with hints of latin flair. From traditional nigiri and sashimi to rolls decorated with jalapeno, cilantro, and mango, Japonessa takes traditional Japanese cooking fundamentals and fuses them with flavors from Latin America." - Japonessa

Some of their most popular items are their Bento boxes, available until 3 pm and changes daily but the bulk of it is an assortment of rolls, sushi, sashimi, salad, cooked items, miso soup.

Another popular option is the Madrid Moon, which is spicy yellowtail, cucumber, cilantro, topped with seared spicy crab, flying fish roe, scallion, drizzled with jalapeno citrus, and truffle oil. Incredible. And let me leave you with their famous, Tres Diablos, spicy tuna, cucumber, cilantro, topped with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, flying fish roe, scallion, drizzled with strawberry habanero sauce. I love anything with spicy tuna.

But let's start off with some drinks before we dive into the food. They have a great wine and sake selection, however, I'm more of a cocktail person. The Lychee Martini with Vodka, Lemon, Soho Lychee liqueur, Lychee syrup is amazing. If you're more into tequila, try the Yuzu Margarita with Don Julio tequila, triple sec, yuzu, togarashi salt rim.

Of course, for an appetizer start with the miso soup, some edamame, and their Ten Spice Tuna Tataki which is seared tuna, jalapeno, garlic ponzu, and cilantro aioli, slightly spicy but delicious.

They have a great Sashimi Salad if you're looking for something light, with a spring mix, onion, pickled Asian vegetables, and spicy sesame-infused dressing.

Their Happy Hour is all day and a few favorites are:

HH Japo Wings: choice of honey chili, japo style (fresh jalapeno and crispy onion), or diablo sauce

HH Dos Carne Tacos: avocado, pico, ghost chili salsa

They also have several sushi items on the happy hour menu like Tuna sashimi, salmon, yellowtail, etc.

In terms of signature rolls, I highly recommend their Barcelona Sunset which isspicy yellowtail, avocado, cucumber, topped w/ yellowtail, flying fish roe, habanero aioli.

My favorite: King Midas, which is spicy tuna, cucumber, avocado, topped w/ yellowtail, cilantro, lime, jalapeno, as well as the Diabla Say, which is Spicy tuna, cilantro, yamagobo, topped with seven spiced tuna, habanero citrus, scallion, flying fish roe.

Don't forget to end your meal with some dessert because they have some amazing mango mochi.
