Sen. Ted Cruz is returning fire, calling Brian Williams "pitiful" after the MSNBC anchor dubbed him "Kremlin Cruz."

In a six-part Twitter thread , Cruz shot back at Williams, whom he called a "pitiful example of corrupt corporate media," saying his accusation that Cruz promoted Russian propaganda was flawed for three reasons.

"(1) I hate communists, my family was imprisoned & tortured by communists, and Brian is a shameless apologist for Russian (and Chinese and Cuban) communists. ... (2) I was arguing that our military needs to be able to kick the a** of Russian soldiers. It’s Brian & his lefty comrades that are working relentlessly to diminish the effectiveness of the U.S. military — the finest fighting force on the face of the planet. ... And (3) JUST THIS WEEK Biden gave Putin a multi-billion-dollar gift, when he waived mandatory U.S. sanctions to allow Russia to build Nord Stream 2, a massive natural gas pipeline to Germany," he tweeted.

GOP BILL WOULD REIMPOSE SANCTIONS ON KREMLIN-BACKED NORD STREAM 2 AFTER BIDEN WAIVER

The Texas Republican called on Williams to report on the proposed GOP sanctions on Russia that are designed to halt the construction of Nord Stream 2. Cruz, however, expressed skepticism that the "left-wing hack" would cover "actual news."

"Cover that, Brian. But that would be actual news, something you don’t do. Use your condescending wit to call Biden 'Kremlin Joe' — he’s the one illegally giving billions to Putin. But your corporate overlords wouldn’t let you," he said.

On MSNBC's The 11th Hour with Brian Williams , Williams dubbed Cruz "Kremlin Cruz" for his "remarkably stupid lapse in judgment" when posting "Russian propaganda, a recruitment video for their military, followed by a video meant to diminish the U.S. military."

"So many things to say here, starting with, 'Don't we want committed and motivated members of our all-volunteer armed forces?'" he said after playing the videos Friday night, later adding, "Imagine how happy it makes [the Kremlin] to have yet another advocate among Republican members of the Senate."

Williams then reminded voters in Texas that they "have a chance to rethink their decision in 2024," when Cruz will be up for reelection.

On Wednesday, Cruz retweeted a post comparing recruitment ads for the Russian and U.S. militaries.

"Holy crap," he wrote. "Perhaps a woke, emasculated military is not the best idea."

Under the Biden administration, federal agencies have released recruitment videos aimed at promoting diversity in their hiring practices, attracting criticism from those on the Right. The Central Intelligence Agency has released a series of ads highlighting that "inclusion is a core value here [at the CIA]."

"I am intersectional, but my existence is not a box-checking exercise," a Latina agent says in one ad in the series, later adding that she "refuse[s] to internalize misguided, patriarchal ideas of what a woman can or should be."

Weeks earlier, the FBI announced the hiring of Scott McMillion as its first chief diversity officer.

"As our chief diversity officer, Scott is the right person to ensure that the FBI fosters a culture of diversity and inclusion and that our workforce reflects the communities we serve," FBI Director Christopher Wray said on April 20. "I’m grateful he has agreed to bring his talent, experience, and dedication to our Office of Diversity and Inclusion, where he will build upon the important work that others started."

The U.S. military has also taken steps to promote diversity in the armed forces. In February, the Navy created a task force designed to "combat discrimination," which recommended sailors to take a pledge to "acknowledge all lived experiences and intersectional identities."

A representative for MSNBC did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner's request for comment.
