(NASSAU COUNTY, N.Y.) Nassau County Executive Laura Curran proposed direct cash relief for county homeowners in an announcement Monday.

Curran proposed the county designate $100 million toward the initiative, citing a $75 million budget surplus as well as incoming federal funding from the American Rescue Plan.

The proposed plan would provide roughly $375 to approximately 300,000 homeowners in the county.

“Nassau County has navigated the pandemic without layoffs or cuts to programs that keep our communities healthy and safe,” Curran said. “Having achieved a hard-earned budget surplus and with federal money coming in, we must now provide direct relief to homeowners in Nassau County.”

Nassau County is expected to receive $385 million in federal funding, including $200 million in 2021 and the remaining $185 million in 2022, due to unprecedented negative economic impact brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program, which would require approval from the County Legislature, would utilize Basic and Enhanced STAR data in order to determine eligibility, according to a press release.

Curran concluded her announcement by calling on the County Legislature to support the program.

“I look forward to working with the legislature and my Economic Advisory Council to move this forward for our residents. I don’t think that there is any question that this is the right thing to do, and I believe that working together, we can get it done.”
