Michigan: bullied by a teacher at seven years old. Her hair chopped off left this girl traumatized.

Imagine sending your curly-haired daughter to school, and when you go to pick her up, you find her in tears with an inch of hair left.

    Brutally cut by a teacher.

This terrible image is the situation Jimmy Hoffmeyer, a black father from Mount Pleasant, Michigan, had to face on the 26th of March.

His seven years old daughter, a biracial first grader attending the Ganiard Elementary School, is traumatized from the experience of having her beautiful locks butchered by the library teacher.

The bully of the school cut her hair two days before.

Jurnee had a bad experience with a bully on the school bus that same week, just two days earlier.

Her curly hair was cut several inches, on one side to around shoulder length.

The family, shocked by the act, took the matter into their hands by taking Jurnee to the hairdresser to chose a new hairstyle.

“I know how today’s society is: I wasn’t going to let my little girl go to school with half of her hair cut off,” said Mr. Hoffmeyer, well aware of how cruel kids can be in situations like this one.

His only reaction to this act of bullying towards his daughter?

He just asked not to allow that kid to sit close to Jurnee ever again.

The library teacher cut the kid's locks without permission.

Then, two days later, the unbelievable act from the library teacher.

The teacher had no parental permission to cut the beautiful curly hair of the seven years old.

"I don’t think there are words to express how I felt in that moment, I asked if the girl on the bus had cut her hair again, and she said, ‘no. My library teacher cut my hair.’ I couldn’t believe it. I jumped in the car to go to school but realized it was spring break. I couldn’t get ahold of anyone, so I called the police.” said Hoffmeyer.

Jimmy wrote an email to Jurnee’s teacher, Kristen Jacobs, declaring that he was going to the police to file a report against the school.

A few minutes later, the principal secretary called him.

The secretary said on the phone that she was in utter disbelief.

But the principal would not be available to talk to him until after spring break.

After a week, Ganiard Principal Marcy Stout called Hoffmeyer.

“She apologized and said she didn’t know why Kelly Mogg, the library teacher, would do that,” Hoffmeyer said.

“I asked what was going to do about it, and she said they would probably get a mark in their progress folder or something. And that any further actions would need to go through the superintendent. So, I told her I want the superintendent to call me”.

And this is where this story goes down the drain in terms of respect.

The superintendent asked if it would make us feel better if she had the teachers send cards with their sorry in the mail, and she sounded false cutting short the call."

No parent would keep their kid in a school where racist attacks happen.

So Jimmy wanted his daughter out of that school as soon as possible.

“The principal tried to convince us to keep her in the school. She said Jurnee would be safe there and offered to follow her around to make sure nothing happened to her,” said Hoffmeyer. “How is the solution to punish my kid?”.

The school had done nothing about the bullying.

Jurnee's story reached the National Parents Union.

The association is actively supporting Jurnee and her family.

In their latest declaration upon the sad fact, the National Parents Union Director of Policy and Legislation stated:

“No child should have to experience this type of humiliating ordeal because of their hair texture, style, or type! The adults entrusted with her learning crossed the line did not protect her and had no desire to be accountable for their actions.”

They are searching for a civil rights attorney for the Hoffmeyer family and offered full ongoing support to them.

Jurnee had to change school and, due to the trauma, she also started going to counseling.

“We have had to take her to the doctor because she has been refusing to eat. She is having trouble sleeping now and always wants to be with us. All of this because her hair did not look how they thought it should. If you look at pictures of her before this happened, you can see her spark and energy. Now it is like it is just gone.”

    said Hoffmeyer.

Unfortunately, Jurnee is another victim of bullying and racism at such a young age.

But it is also encouraging to know that many organizations are taking a stand against this type of discrimination, hoping it never happens again.

We hope Jurnee gets better soon and that students in schools all across America will treat each other with respect.
