The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Berrien County.

According to GBI officials, a preliminary investigation revealed that a Georgia State Patrol (GSP) Trooper initiated a traffic stop for speeding involving 53-year-old Roy Kyle Mathis, a resident of Berrien County. Mathis reportedly refused to stop, leading to a pursuit. During the chase, the Trooper performed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver, after which they attempted to remove Mathis from his vehicle.

At this point, Mathis allegedly advanced toward the Trooper, prompting the Trooper to fire at the vehicle. Mathis then fled, eventually turning onto a dirt road and crashing into a tree in the yard of a private residence. The Trooper deployed a taser while attempting to remove Mathis from the vehicle.

Although Mathis was not injured, he was evaluated at the scene by EMS and transported to a local hospital. After being treated, he was released and taken into custody at the Berrien County Jail.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation, and once complete, the case file will be forwarded to the Alapaha District Attorney’s Office for review.
