NEWPORT — Two people reported injuries following a three-vehicle traffic accident on East Broadway at 1:30 Monday afternoon, causing a significant backup in the downtown area. According to a report from the Newport Police Department, the accident occurred when a 2023 Freightliner semi failed to stop.

The semi, owned by Feldspar Trucking, was operated by Eric Ray Burlan, 32, of Hendersonville, North Carolina. It struck the rear of a 2017 Ford F-150 owned by Charter Communications, operated by Robert Marshall Walker, 39, of Jefferson City. The F-150 then struck the back of a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox operated by Joyce R. Ball, 53, of Newport.

The report indicates that Ball’s vehicle was stopped in the westbound lane for a red traffic light at the McSween Avenue intersection. Walker’s truck was stopped behind her. All three vehicles were westbound.

According to the report, all three drivers said that the semi failed to stop, causing it to strike the pickup truck and pushing it into the SUV.

A passenger in Ball’s vehicle, Justin Lawrence Green, 42, of Newport, complained of rib, back and neck pain. He exited the vehicle and laid down on the sidewalk near the crash scene in front of US Bank.

The report indicates that Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were treating Green, but EMS could not transport Green because of an unrelated incident that required immediate attention. Green was transported by personal vehicle to Newport Medical Center.

Walker complained of back pain, but chose to be seen medically after the accident scene was cleared.

The F-150 was disabled by the incident and was towed from the scene by Hartford Towing. The semi was driven to a location for the trucking company to recover its load.
