Man pulled over in NN for unrestrained child was caught with illegal drugs and firearm

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man was sentenced in Newport News on Thursday to six and a half years in prison after he was caught with illegal possession of drugs and a firearm, a release states.

29-year-old Daquan Lane was originally pulled over on Sept. 9, 2022, after Newport News police saw a 7-year-old child not properly secured in the vehicle. While conducting a traffic stop, the officers saw a bag of suspected narcotics poking out from the pocket of Lane’s hoodie.

Lane refused to leave the vehicle and officers discovered more drugs while attempting to remove him.

The narcotic bags fell from his hoodie pocket. NNPD recovered bags containing 8.37 grams of a mixture of heroin and fentanyl, 4.69 grams of a mixture of heroin and fentanyl, 8.19 grams of methamphetamine, 4.71 grams of cocaine and a flip phone. NNPD also conducted a search of the vehicle, finding a loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun, two digital scales containing narcotics residue and approximately 140 grams of marijuana in 12 separate bags.

Due to his status as a felon from a 2013 incident, Lane was not legally allowed to possess a gun. In 2013, Lane was convicted of shooting at an occupied building, attempted malicious wounding, two counts of use/display a firearm during commission of a felony and reckless handling of a firearm.

On Oct. 30, 2023, Lane pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute heroin and fentanyl, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
