Local groups can apply for $35,000 in tobacco grants

Grassroots organizations in Broome and Tioga counties can apply for a share of $35,000 in funding for community projects addressing commercial tobacco use and its health effects. The funding is being offered through Tobacco Free Broome and Tioga's Advancing Tobacco Free Communities grant, held by the New York State Department of Health's Bureau of Tobacco Control, according to a community announcement. Eligible applicants are grassroots organizations serving Broome and/or Tioga County that work with communities disproportionately affected by commercial tobacco use and its health consequences. Applications must be submitted by Nov. 11. Projects will run from Dec. 17 through April 30, 2027, with the potential for additional funding beyond the initial project period. What projects can receive funding? Applicants may propose work in one or more of four priority areas: Smoke-free multi-unit housing Tobacco product waste and the environment Retail environment Tobacco-free outdoor spaces Tobacco Free Broome and Tioga said selected organizations will work with program staff to engage community members and pursue policy, systems and environmental changes intended to improve public health. Potential activities include community conversations, educational outreach, resident engagement, policy education and partnerships with local organizations and municipal leaders. Residents turn out in strong numbers to vote across Chemung County

It wasn't a presidential election year, but that didn't stop Chemung County voters from turning out in large numbers Tuesday, Nov. 3 to cast their ballot in the general election . In addition to contested races for governor, attorney general and other state positions, voters also had to decide who would lead county government for the next four years, with choices for county executive and several legislative seats. Even in smaller communities across the county, turnout was strong, even though off year elections typically don't attract as much voter interest. At the Chemung Fire Department, 291 residents had cast their ballots by noon, which was much heavier than usual, poll workers said. At the Village of Wellsburg/Town of Ashland Municipal Building, the parking lot was full at 2 p.m. and cars were lined up down the street as residents waited their turn to fill out their ballots. Voting at Elmira High School was busier than the last 10 years, election inspectors said. For some residents, exercising their right to vote was a rejection of the status quo.
