Fire officials: 39 people, including 8 children, displaced in Newark Broadway Street fire

Thirty-one adults and eight children have been displaced by a fire in Newark on Broadway Street on Monday night, fire officials say.

According to fire officials, the blaze rekindled earlier this morning but has since been controlled.

Several businesses were damaged in the fire that started at 7 p.m. Monday. Fire officials say it was under control by 10:15 p.m.

News 12 New Jersey was told one firefighter suffered minor burns on his chest and neck.

Witnesses told News 12 that flames could be seen at a restaurant on the first floor of one the buildings. There's also a supermarket and liquor store on the first floor.

The Red Cross says it is helping the families displaced with temporary housing, food and clothing.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
