Anti-crime unit ramps up patrol efforts at West Side High School in Newark following shooting

A group modeled after the Guardian Angels, the anti-crime unit that was popular in New York City in the 1980s, announced Wednesday night it’s fast forwarding its efforts to help patrol the West Side High School campus in Newark’s West Ward perimeter to help keep students safe after a shooting happened Tuesday off campus.

The two boys remain in stable condition after being shot around 2:45 p.m. Tuesday outside West Side High School. School will be open Wednesday.

There is no word on the shooter or motive as police continue to investigate the incident.

The foundation STOPNOW Patrols is looking for volunteers in Newark. Volunteers are drug tested then trained in situational awareness and basic intervention techniques. They remain unarmed, identifiable by berets and uniform and typically patrol school neighborhoods in groups of four to eight people.

Volunteers do not enter schools but give residents a chance to help keep students safe in their neighborhoods.

The group says it currently operates outside of schools and universities around the country.
