On Sunday, Newarkers will have an opportunity to remember and honor the Americans who have died serving their country.

The city’s annual, two-part Memorial Day commemoration begins at 1 p.m. May 19 with a somber ceremony in front of the University of Delaware’s Memorial Hall, which was built in honor of Delawareans who died in World War I. The ceremony will include drills, the presentation of flags, patriotic music and the firing of a cannon.

Following that, the Memorial Day parade will begin at 2 p.m. with marchers representing military units, veterans’ groups, schools and community organizations parading down Main Street.

The parade will start at South College Avenue and end at Chapel Street, with participants traveling opposite the usual flow of traffic.

Both events are free and open to the public. Parking is free in city-run lots.

The following roads will have detours and closures in effect beginning at noon and continuing until 3:30 p.m.:
