The Newark Police Department stayed busy on St. Patrick’s Day weekend, issuing nearly 80 citations and warnings to green-clad revelers.

Recent St. Patrick’s Day weekends have been quieter, but this year the holiday returned to pre-pandemic levels of activity, police said. Nice weather, with temperatures in the 60s on both March 16 and 17, no doubt contributed to the increase in large crowds on Main Street and at off-campus parties.

Newark Police had extra officers on duty for the weekend. Police reported encountering the largest parties on Cleveland Avenue, North Chapel Street, West Main Street and Choate Street.

According to statistics released March 22, over St. Patrick’s Day weekend, Newark Police issued 18 daytime noise warnings, 10 summonses for noise violations, 30 summonses for alcohol violations, four summonses for disorderly conduct, seven summonses for disorderly premises, three warnings for holding a gathering with over 150 people without a permit, one summons for resisting arrest and five citations for traffic offenses.
