First Alert Weather: Monday night looking extremely wet 03:15

NEW YORK -- A Red Alert is in place for Monday night due to the threat of strong-to-severe thunderstorms

The Memorial Day weekend got off to a great start Saturday and the sunny and warm trend will continue Sunday.

A few showers are possible later Saturday night, but they are not anticipated to be heavy or widespread. Lows will mainly be in the 60s, with some fog development late.

    Sunday's forecast

A phenomenal day is in store for Sunday, with highs in the mid to upper 80s. Although temperatures will be cooler at the coast, it will be a perfect day for the beach, especially with a low chance of rip currents.

As humidity starts to creep up later in the day, a stray shower or storm is possible. Otherwise, a decent amount of sunshine should be in place.

    Monday's forecast

Unfortunately, the stellar weather will almost certainly disappear on Memorial Day. On-and-off showers are expected from the morning hours through the late afternoon.

After 6 p.m. is when the Red Alert conditions will move in. Strong-to-severe thunderstorms are anticipated up until midnight. The storms could contain torrential rain, damaging wind, and hail. A very humid airmass will be in place by then, so the storms will have a lot of moisture to work with, and therefore could be capable of producing flash flooding. The greatest chance of flooding would be for areas northwest of the city. Highs will only reach the mid 70s.
