The Katonah Avenue non-profit provides free programs and services to the Irish diaspora and immigrants from over 130 countries, reaching 35,000 people a year. The project, supported by $750,000 in capital funding from New York State, will modernize and expand the facility, allowing EIIC to better meet the needs of New York's immigrants .
"While the days of 'Irish Need Not Apply' are behind us, the needs of our Irish diaspora, and the newest New Yorkers from around the globe remain urgent," Emerald Isle Immigration Center Executive Director Siobhan Dennehy said.
Established in 1988 in Woodside, Queens , EIIC first served the needs of the Irish diaspora through immigration and nationalization. It now serves New Yorkers from two locations for free with legal assistance and educational programs, empowering immigrants to navigate complex systems, become citizens, and thrive in American society .
The project involves adding a third floor, refurbishing the underutilized second-floor space, and installing an elevator, which will more than double the available area for programs, activities, and events .
The center will feature four floors dedicated to a diverse range of uses, including a modern training lab and library, private consultation rooms for clients, and expanded office space. It is expected to be completed by winter 2024.
Consul General of Ireland in New York Helena Nolan said the state's support is "a clear testament to the central place the EIIC holds in the fabric of this city," while State Senator Jamaal Bailey described Emerald Isle as a "pillar in that community" and a "guiding light for immigrant communities , empowering them to flourish in their new home".
Emerald Isle Immigration Center Board Chairman John Tully added: "We are very excited to see that this much needed upgrade will soon be a reality. This grand facility will allow us to continue serving the Woodlawn community and better position us to enhance the social services we are well known for and provide a gathering place for all."
