New York City Mayor Eric Adams railed against several New York universities on Wednesday for allowing “another country’s flag to fly in our country,” despite the fact that Adams has repeatedly raised foreign flags himself.

Reacting during a press conference to videos which showed pro-Palestine student protesters raising Palestinian flags at Columbia University and City College, Adams said, “You don’t take over our buildings and put another flag up. That may be fine to other people but, it’s not to me.”

He continued, “My uncle died defending this country and these men and women put their lives on the line, and it’s despicable that schools would allow another country’s flag to fly in our country.”

Despite his protests, Adams has repeatedly raised the flags of other nations in New York City, including the Israeli flag, the Ukrainian flag, the Irish flag, the Turkish flag, and the Italian flag.

In June 2023, Adams waved an Israeli flag at the Celebrate Israel parade, while in October he was photographed waving an Italian flag on Columbus Day. That same year, in March, Adams raised the Irish flag during a New York City ceremony for Ireland.

In March 2022, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Adams raised the Ukrainian flag in New York City’s Bowling Green. Adams raised the Turkish flag in New York on several occasions, including in 2015 and 2o22.

Adams has been involved with so many flag-raising ceremonies that the New York Times even published an article in 2023 titled, “Why Eric Adams Likes to Raise Flags.”
