NEW TOWN, ND ( KXNET ) — The MHA nation uses a unique set of seeds that are bred specifically for the North Dakota climate — and on Wednesday, April 23, the Nueta Hidatsa Sannish College in New Town hosted a Food and Seed Summit to help share this special blend with the community around it.

During the event, a variety of these seeds — including Mandan Red Bride corn, sunflower, Hidatsa orange squash, and beans — were shown to attendees.

There were also resource tables where guests to learn more about how to save and store seeds properly, as well as how to start planting and caring for crops themselves.

“It is a chance to share this information and knowledge with more people,” said Bernie Young Bird with the NHSC Native Studies Department. “Hopefully, it will go even further and further. We must give our people an opportunity to go back to these practices.”

Those who attended the event were also able to take sets of seeds home — which will enable them to grow the MHA’s plants in their own pots and gardens.
