NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ -- New Providence scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and went on to upset state-ranked Westfield, 6-4, in baseball on Thursday afternoon.

The score was tied, 4-4, before the Pioneers (6-10) scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Senior center fielder Andrew Kowantz went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI for New Providence. Sean Reilly pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief with two hits allowed and one strikeout for the win, and then freshman left-hander Matt Santacross pitched two hitless innings with a walk and two strikeouts to get the save.

Vinny Bisaccia went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and Reilly singled and drove in two runs for the Pioneers, whose last five games have included wins over tough non-conference opponents Ridge and Madison, and one-run losses to talented divisional opponents Gov. Livingston and Summit.

This was only the second loss for Westfield (12-2), which had defeated New Providence, 5-2, earlier this season.

New Providence (6-10), the No. 9 seed, will play eighth-seeded Union Catholic in the first round of the Union County Tournament on Saturday at 2 p.m.
