New Orleans police are still investigating a shooting that took place on Monday (April 22) in Algiers near the McDonough Playground.
25-year-old, Brittney Ussin lost her life after viral fight went down near the playground. According to multiple news outlets, it’s not clear why the altercation happened but during the fight that is surfacing on social media Ussin was seen suffering from a gun shot wound. Ussin was taken to a hospital by EMS, but died there. Police on Wednesday evening arrested Nayiondra Woolridge, 32, for her suspected role in Ussin’s murder. She was booked into jail on one count of second-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, and one count of simple battery, according to FOX8.
The family held a vigil for Ussin on Thursday where Ussin’s aunt, Cotrena McIntyre said she was relieved after the person police say killed her niece was arrested. “I fell to the ground. I could not believe that this happened. You know that they were able to apprehend the shooter so quick,” McIntyre said. “You continued to pull that trigger and know that a bullet was going to come out after it was jammed two times. You knew at that point what you intended to do,” McIntyre added.
As the family continued to talk to the news outlet they explained that Ussin was premature when she was born and they refer to her as their special baby. “She was full of love, full of life. She loved unconditional and she loved her sisters. She also loved her brother and her babies,” Ussin said.
Her aunt also called for people in the world to put their guns down and stop the violence. “They should have been able to talk this out. They should’ve been able to find a better solution for their disagreement,” McIntyre said.
“She had six beautiful children who she loved dearly, held close to her heart and it’s so unfortunate that my grandchildren will have to go through life without her,” Ussin said.
