Forty Revolutionary War veterans are known to have been buried in the cemeteries of small towns across Wisconsin, and most of them will be garlanded for Memorial Day. To my mind, the most notable of these markers is the one in Union Grove, the Racine County village where I grew up. As a school child with an interest in history, it delighted me that the cemetery on the south end of our town was the final resting place of Phineas Cadwell, a New Englander who had enlisted with the 18th Regiment, Connecticut Militia, in the year the revolution against the British Empire began.
