New Glarus man dead, woman injured after UTV crash in Lafayette County

FAYETTE, Wis. -- A New Glarus man died and a woman was seriously injured after a UTV crash Sunday evening in Lafayette County, Sheriff Reg Gill said.

In a press release Monday, Gill said the crash was reported at around 7:30 p.m. on May 19 along County Highway F north of the intersection with County Highway G in the Town of Fayette.

Sheriff's deputies as well as Darlington Fire and Lafayette County EMS crews responded to the crash along with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

According to Gill, an investigation found that a UTV was traveling north on County Highway F when the driver, 40-year-old Dustin P. Matzke of New Glarus, lost control and left the roadway on the west side, continuing down a steep embankment.

Matzke and his passenger, a 44-year-old New Glarus woman, were both seriously injured. Matzke was taken to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County where he was pronounced dead. His passenger was flown by UW Med Flight to University Hospital in Madison.

The DNR is investigating the crash with assistance from the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office.
