    Cool off at these Beaver Valley area swimming pools and lakes

    Summer approaches, bringing with it the outdoor swimming season.

    Here are some local pools and lakes ready to cool you off once the temperatures rise:

    Raccoon Creek State Park Lake, Hanover Township

    Season: The 500-foot, ADA-accessible, sand/turf beach plans to open Memorial Day weekend and offer public swimming until mid-September. Hours are 8 a.m. to sunset.

    A bathhouse and a concession stand are nearby.

    Smoking is prohibited.

    Rates: Free

    Bradys Run Park Lake, Brighton Township

    Season opens: Memorial Day through Labor Day.

    Hours: Dawn to dusk. Swim at your own risk.

    Rates: Free.

    Sunrise Pool, New Brighton

    Season: Outdoor pool (roof is retractable) starts May 31 and runs through Aug. 18. Hours are adult swim, 11 a.m. to noon; open swim noon to 6 p.m. seven days per week (weather permitting). Prices are the same as last season: $5 for adults 18 and older; $4 for students ages 5-17; $3 for ages 4 and younger and seniors 60 and older. Yearly passes are available

    Also offers: Snack bar/refreshment stand.

    Old Economy Park Pool, Economy

    Opens: June 8 through Labor Day.

    Hours and daily rates to be announced.

    Veterans Memorial Pool, Ellwood City

    Open: June 5 to Sept. 9 from noon to 7 p.m. Lap swim 11 to 11:50 a.m.

    The 164-foot-by-64-foot pool with a separate baby pool offers a spacious lawn to sunbathe.

    If the pool water or air temperatures are not expected to reach 73 degrees, the pool will not open that day.

    Daily rates: Ages 2-17 and 60+, $5; ages 18-59, $6 for residents; $6 and $8 for nonresidents.

    Frankie's Splash Pad

    Opens: June 1 for its grand opening.

    Chippewa Township Municipal Park's new attraction, a splash pad, is at 2811 Darlington Road behind the Chippewa Municipal Building.

    The grand opening event will run 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. but Frankie's Splashpad will be open that day until 8 p.m. After the grand opening, Frankie's Splashpad will be open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

    Veterans Memorial Pool, Midland

    Opens: Aiming for July 4, as work commences on a new pump purchase via a state grant.

    Moraine State Park, Butler County

    Opens: daily from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day unless otherwise posted. The regular hours are 8 a.m. to sunset.

    Swimming is permitted at two beaches along the shore of Lake Arthur:

    • Lakeview Beach on the North Shore is a 656-foot sand beach
    • The Pleasant Valley Beach on the South Shore is a 400-foot turf and sand beach. A sand volleyball court and playground are on the west side of the beach.

    Showers, changing facilities, and snack bars are available at both beaches.

    Swim at your own risk.

    Rates: Free.

    North Park and Settlers Cabin Park , Allegheny County

    Opens: The Settlers Cabin Park Wave Pool in Robinson Township and North Park Swimming Pool in McCandless Township open the first weekend of June, weather permitting.

    Hours: 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Concessions will also be open.

    Admission: Adults, $6 for residents, $8 for non-residents; seniors, $3 for residents, $4 for non-residents; youths, $5 for residents, $6 for non-residents; ages 5 and younger, $1.
