NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Anyone interested in a career in emergency medical services (EMS) can now register for a new program in New Bedford.
The New Bedford EMT Training Academy offers 180 hours of classroom and hands-on instruction to prepare students for their state certification test and a “rewarding, in-demand career,” Mayor Jon Mitchell said in a press release.
The academy covers a “wide range of subjects,” according to the city, including first aid, EMS operations, anatomy and physiology. Students will also get to go on ride-alongs and do field work with EMTs and paramedics.
The inaugural class currently has four students, but New Bedford EMS Director Michael Thomas said “word has started to spread around the city.”
“We’ve already had people call and ask about the next class,” he said. “We started this program to get the next generation of EMTs in the door, and so far so good.”
The city said the program is flexible, with both daytime and evening sessions available. The academy costs $1,350 in full, however, there’s a discount for New Bedford residents.
“New Bedford EMTs and medical first responders are making a difference in the lives of our residents day in and day out,” Mitchell said. “They are there for us all, administering life-saving aid and comforting concerned family members in case of an emergency.”
