Kewanee police blotter for June 11
Police responded to a report of mischievous conduct in the 100 block of West Division Street. A traffic accident involving vehicles driven by Jamiha N. Israel, 19, Kewanee, and Brent E. Colwell, 77, Kewanee, was reported at Main and Prospect streets. Israel was issued citations for disobeying a traffic control device and defective equipment. She was given a notice to appear.
Death investigation underway in Kewanee
KEWANEE, Ill. — Police officers in Kewanee are investigating after finding a man dead during a wellness check over the weekend. According to Kewanee police, officers conducted a welfare check on the 800 block of West Division Street on Saturday, June 8, shortly after 10 p.m. During the check, officers said they found an unresponsive male, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Florida man facing DUI charges after driving burning semi on I-80 in Illinois, police say
HENRY COUNTY, Ill. — A Florida man is facing DUI charges after allegedly driving a burning semi approximately one mile in Henry County, Illinois early Saturday morning. According to the Illinois State Police, the incident happened shortly before 2:15 a.m. June 8 on I-80, around two miles east of the I-74 interchange. Officers responded to the area for a commercial vehicle fire.
Police investigating death on West Division Street
Law enforcement officials are investigating a death that occurred late Saturday in the 800 block of West Division Street. In a statement released Sunday afternoon Kewanee police said officers went to the Division Street address to check on the welfare of an individual. They found an “unresponsive male individual who was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the release said.

Public invited to attend reception for Dr. Chris Sullens
The public is invited to attend a reception celebrating the retirement of Dr. Chris Sullens as superintendent of the Kewanee School District. Sullens began his career in education as the industrial arts teacher at Galva High School in 1986, a job he held for 12 years. In 1998 he became principal at Neponset High School; he moved to the grade school the next year, when Neponset High was deactivated. Two years later Sullens became principal and superintendent at Neponset, and in 2006 he became superintendent of both Kewanee and Neponset. In 2011, Neponset was annexed to the Kewanee district and Sullens remained as Kewanee superintendent.
