U.S. Marshals capture fugitive wanted in 2023 Cash Saver murders

NATCHEZ — Jamionte Davis, 24, wanted for two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder in the May 5, 2023, shooting in the parking lot near Cash Savers in Natchez, has been captured in Harrison County, Texas, by the U.S. Marshal Service.

Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said the capture of fugitive Davis has been a long time coming. He said the process has begun to extradite Davis to Natchez, where he will stand trial.

Travione Jones, 19, and Devin Winchester, 19, both of Natchez, were gunned down that Friday night just after 10 p.m. soon after exiting a car in the parking lot of the strip mall behind Popeye’s on D’Evereux Drive. The shooters used an assault-type weapon fired from outside Cash Savers supermarket. Police recovered dozens of shell casings from the shooting.

Their bodies remained in the parking lot covered in sheets until vans from the Adams County Coroner’s Office arrived. A crowd of more than 200 people quickly gathered as Natchez Police arrived and began cordoning off the scene with crime tape.

After working non-stop through the weekend in coordination with investigators from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, Natchez Police arrested and charged Kadeem Conner, 25, and Mark Jordan Mitchell, 32, both of Natchez, with two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder.

Natchez Police also issued a warrant for the same charges against Davis, who allegedly quickly fled the state.

At the time of the shooting, Natchez Police Commander Jerry Ford said the motive for the killings was an ongoing feud between those involved. Jones is believed to have been the target of the shooters, and perhaps one of the three who were injured. However, Ford said Winchester does not seem to have been a target. “He was with the wrong company at the wrong time,” he said.

Sheriff Patten said Monday that Natchez Police and ACSO investigators never gave up on working to bring Davis back to Natchez to stand trial for the murders. He also thanked the U.S. Marshal’s service for their excellent work and continuing partnership with Natchez and Adams County.

“We received some information about his whereabouts out of state and the U.S. Marshals were able to execute a warrant and capture Jamionte Davis without incident. This has been a long time coming for both agencies and for the families who lost loved ones that day,” Patten said. “I thank so much the staff of the Natchez Police Department and the Adams County Sheriff’s Office for doing their due diligence in this case and not giving up the fight for justice for the families of the victims.”
