Titans in agreement with WR Tyler Boyd on free agent contract

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans and veteran wide receiver Tyler Boyd have agreed to terms on a free agent contract.

Boyd previously played for Titans head coach Brian Callahan when he was the offensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals.

From 2016-2023 with the Bengals, Boyd had 513 catches, 6,000 receiving yards, and 31 touchdown receptions. He now lands in Nashville where he joins a receiving corps that includes DeAndre Hopkins, Calvin Ridley, and Treylon Burks.

Boyd has lost a step over the last year or two. He’s not the same guy he was in 2018 and 2019 when he had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons.

At this stage in his career, Boyd struggles to win against man coverage. But he still has the awareness and reliable hands to be productive as a slot option against zone coverage.

I spoke to NFL coaches at the combine in Indianapolis who told me that Boyd was someone who should only bed signed to a one-year deal. They added, however, that the impact he would have on the locker room and his production against zone was worth bringing in for any team in need of a slot receiver.

The Titans are definitely one of the teams who were trying to find an established weapon in the slot. Treylon Burks, Kyle Philips, and 2024 sixth-round pick Jha’Quan Jackson just come with too many question marks at this point.

Boyd's experience in the league and familiarity with Brian Callahan make this a really good fit for both parties. If Tennessee's offensive line can take a jump under the tutelage of Bill Callahan, the Titans'  offense is going to be dangerous in 2024. Will Levis has the supporting cast to succeed.
